La primera partida que terminó fue la de Maxime Vachier-Lagrave y Richard Rapport. El húngaro, jugando con negras, había respondido con la Variante Bird en la partida Española. Vachier-Lagrave siguió fiel al estilo de gambito con una jugada poco habitual, 6.b4 y después de que su oponente la hubiese rechazado, ganó cierto espacio. Sin embargo, tuvo que tragarse el impacto del alfil en h3 en el movimiento 15. Eso condujo a jaque continuo y finalmente a unas rápidas tablas.
La ligera ventaja de Ian Nepomniachtchi tras la apertura en la Defensa Grünfeld, se esfumó pronto. En lugar de ello, de repente Etienne Bacrot tenía una ligera iniciativa con negras, gracias a la pareja de alfiles y el típico peón avanzado en el flanco de dama. Aún así, en el final de damas que surgió, las negras no consiguieron ganar más terreno y la partida concluyó en tablas.
Alexander Moissenko no logró alzarse con ninguna ventaja con 5.Ad3 contra la Defensa India de Rey de Ding Liren. El chino nunca se vio en serios apuros. En la fase final de la partida, con torre y caballo, también ésta partida derivó hacia el empate.
