En las primeras cuatro rondas, Hou Yifan había tenido que enfrentarse con jugadoras femeninas y comenzó a enojarse. A continuación se vio las caras con Michael Adams, después con Pia Cramling, otra mujer. Contra Ider Borya (¡un hombre!) Hou Yifan jugo una partida fantástica. Lo que le daba rabia a Hou Yifan, por supuesto, no era el hecho de tener que jugar contra ajedrecistas del mismo sexo, sino que sus adversarias tenían valoraciones Elo bastante inferiores a la suya, en comparación con hombres que juegan al mismo nivel, pero tienen más puntos Elo.
Previamente a la octava ronda, Hou Yifan, según comenta en una videoentrevista, había planteado una protesta al árbitro. Pero éste, le indicó que el sorteo de los emparejamientos se había realizado con la máquina y que los organizadores no podían influir en los emparejamientos.
En la última ronda, se le acabó la paciencia a Hou Yifan y protestó "a su manera" y jugando lo siguiente:

En una entrevista la Campeona del Mundo explicó su comportamiento y pidió perdón a los seguidores. El organizador Brian Callaghan no quiso dramatizar el acontecimiento y lo llamó "un mal día en la oficina" y opinó que Hou Yifan se había hecho más daño a si misma que al torneo. Comentó también que esperaba que Hou Yifan vuelva a participar en el torneo de Gibraltar en el futuro.
