En pocos torneos abiertos de la historia habrá ocurrido algo similar: sólo cuatro de los diez primeros cabezas de serie han ganado las dos primeras partidas. Son el estadounidense Nakamura, quien necesitó cinco horas para doblegar al español Miguel Santos; el británico Michael Adams; el chino Yangyi Yu; y el ruso Nikita Vitiugov. Vasili Ivanchuk perdió por tiempo una posición ganadora ante el israelí Ori Kobo porque omitió la anotación de la jugada 24 y creyó que ya había hecho 40.
Los tropiezos sufridos por los otros seis principales favoritos incluyen el empate del número uno del torneo y número dos del mundo, el estadounidense Fabiano Caruana, con el argentino Leandro Krysa. Y el del 2º cabeza de serie, el francés Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, con el israelí Nitzan Steinberg.
Otros resbalones importantes son los de Péter Svídler, heptacampeón de Rusia, y el búlgaro Véselin Topálov, excampeón del mundo, que cedieron sendos empates al noruego Johan Salomon y al francés Jean-Noel Riff, respectivamente. Así como el del ruso Maxim Matlákov, 12º cabeza de serie, frente al español Pablo Almagro. Otro español, Pere Garriga (2.386 puntos Elo) hizo tablas con el sueco Erik Blomqvist (2.574). Y entre las abundantes sorpresas también destaca el empate de la sueca Pía Cramling (2.454) con el francés Laurent Fressinet (2.660).
