11/04/2017 – Tras las 11 rondas regulares del Campeonato de EE.UU. Individual Absoluto, Wesley So y Alexander Onischuk habían quedado empatados con 7 puntos. Por lo tanto era necesario que disputaran un duelo de desempate. Las partidas se jugaron con un ritmo de juego de 25 minutos con 5 segundos en modo Bronstein: si se realiza el movimiento en menos de 5 segundos, no se consume tiempo en el reloj. Onischuk alcanzó buenas posiciones pero, cuando se complicó la situación en la primera, perdió el hilo y la partida. La segunda concluyó en tablas. Wesley So ganó el duelo 1,5:0,5 y es el nuevo Campeón de EE.UU.

Los desempates del individual absoluto de EE. UU.

La estructura general de ambas competiciones es la misma en el campeonato absoluto y en el femenino. Ambos torneos se disputan a 11 rondas (el día 9 de abril se disputará la última ronda, el día 10 habrá duelos de desempate, si fuesen necesarios). El ritmo de juego es de 90 minutos para los primeros 40 movimientos, seguido por 30 minutos para el resto de la partida con un incremento de 30 segundos por movimiento a partir del primero.

Si dos o más jugadores quedasen empatados a puntos en el primer puesto, se disputarían partidas de desepate combinando las modalidades de ajedrez rápido, relámpago y por último una partida a todo o nada.
