Los dos brontosaurios
Los dos grandes maestros de ajedrez Helmut Pfleger y Vlastimil Hort durante muchos años han sido las caras del ajedrez alemán en la televisión. Helmut Pfleger era médico y llegó a la televisión mediante unos programas de ajedrez escolar emitidos en los canales secundarios de la televisión bávara. Era al experto de ajedrez de cabecera también en la Norddeutscher Rundfunk NDR3 y llegó a ser el copresentador de programas con Claus Spahn en la Westdeutscher Rundfunk 3.
"Schach der Großmeister" ("El ajedrez de los grandes maestros") se emitió en la WDR entre los años 1983 y 2005 una vez al año, primero un domingo por la tarde y más tarde por la noche.
Con los años tuvieron muchos invitados famosos en el programa, como por ejemplo, Kasparov, Karpov, Timman, Hübner, Kramnik, Anand o Polgar. Solían jugar una o varias partidas en directo entre ellos. Pfleger y Hort comentaban las partidas sobre la marcha. Las anécdotas y los comentarios con análisis de Helmut Pfleger se veían complementados por los comentarios del fantástico humor seco y salado de Hort.
Para supervisar los comentarios de los grandes maestros más adelante contraron a Matthias Wüllenweber, programador jefe y propietario de ChessBase, que entonces solía aportar lo que opinaba el programa de ajedrez Fritz de las partidas.

Después de que se emitiese la última entrega del programa en 2005, se acabó el ajedrez en la telvisión alemana.
Durante el Campeonato del Mundo entre Carlsen y Karjakin en Nueva York, los medios de comunicación, portales de Internet y la prensa impresa compitieron a la hora de hacerse eco del acontecimiento.
La televisión noruega planificó todo muy bien y se había asegurado los derechos de televisión para Noruega, para cubrir las 12 partidas del duelo y también las eventuales partidas de desempate. Los noruegos cubrieron el acontecimiento a lo grande en los programas de televisión.
Pero volvamos a los dos "brontosaurios" (según los llamó el propio Hort). Helmut Pfleger y Vlastimil Hort seguramente se habrán quedado impresionados al ver el cambio de tendencia en el interés de los medios de comunicación por el ajedrez. Sea como fuere, ellos también han jugado un papel importante a la hora de popularizar el ajedrez en la televisión en su momento.
