Recibe el nombre del gran maestro ruso del sigo XIX, Mikhail Chigorin. Fue uno de los pocos jugadores de elite que prefieren los caballos a los alfiles, lo que muestra la naturaleza poco convencional de la apertura. La Chigorin también la han empleado algunos modernos inconformistas; Alexander Morozevich y Richard Rapport son dos de los más destacados.
