Entre el 21 y el 30 de diciembre de 2015 se disputó el Festival de Ajedrez de Groninga (Holanda) en el Centro Deportivo de la Universidad de Groninga. El torneo principal del festival era el Abierto A. Además hubo un duelo entre Sipke Ernst y Lucas van Foreest. También se disputaron varios torneos para aficionados y juveniles y exhibiciones de partidas simultáneas.

El duelo entre el gran maestro holandés Sipke Ernst y el joven Lucas van Foreest (14 años) fue una lucha de David contra Goliath. En este caso fue el peso pesado quien se hizo con la victoria. Tras dos empates al comienzo, Sipke Ernst demostró su clase magistral y ganó cuatro partidas consecutivas. Al final el marcador quedó en 5:1 a favor de Sipke Ernst.

En el torneo abierto, la familia Van Foreest pudo brillar más que en el duelo. El hermano mayor de Lucas, Jorden van Foreest, se coronó campeón del torneo tras nueve rondas, junto con el GM indio Sundar Shyam. Jorden tenía la mejor valoración de desempate y se alzó con la victoria del torneo.
