El número uno de Canadá y defensor del título, Eric Hansen jugó un buen torneo, derrotando a los grandes maestros Vera y Moradiabadi, y empatando con Short y Sokolov. Aún así fue adelantado por Nigel Short en el desempate.

A pesar de que el inglés Nigel Short resida en Atenas, casi se podría ver como una victoria casera, porque Nigel está en Canadá muy a menudo. Es más, ha jugado más torneos de ajedrez en Ottawa que cualquiera de los demás contrincantes, incluso entre los participantes canadienses.
En 2007 Nigel acudió al Campeonato Abierto de Canadá con su hija Kyveli. Aquel año quedó segundo, medio punto por detrás de Bu Xiangzhi. Este año le acompañó su hijo de 14 años, Nicholas, quien también participó en el torneo abierto. Ambos comenzaron sus partidas de la sexta ronda con 1.c4 e5 2.Cc3 Ab4 con lo cual casi se podría sospechar que Nigel se trajo a su hijo como entrenador. La verdad es que para Nicholas fue su primer torneo.
