Fue un duelo sumamente interesante en el cual el Campeón del Mundo demostró que igual "no vale tanto la dama". Shakhriyar Mamedyarov venció el héroe local, Nico Georgiadis. Ayer se enfrentaron las estrellas en la primera ronda del torneo cerrado de y grandes y "súper grandes" maestros. En la primera ronda le tocó a Magnus Carlsen con el mejor jugador de la República Checa, David Navara.
Tras 14...e5 las blancas retiraron el caballo a c2 y tras 15...Td8 sacrificó la dama con 16.Cxb4 por una torre y una pieza ligera. La partida era estratégicamente muy interesante. Durante mucho tiempo permanecía la bailanza dinámica, pero en la fase final Magnus Carlsen obtuvo una posición en la que la torre y el caballo (junto con el peón) resultan ser superiores a la dama.
No había remedio contra el avance del peón "e". Las blancas ganaron la partida más adelante en el final de peones. .
Otra victoria se apuntó Shakhriyar Mamedyarov frente al héroe local, Nico Georgiadis.
Las blancas obtuvieron una clara ventaja con 22.Axd5, seguido por 23.dxc5.
La partida entre Maxime Vachier-Lagrave y Peter Svidler concluyó en tablas (variante anti Marshall en luna Española).
