09/07/2018 – Entre el 6 y el 8 de julio, se disputó el Magistral "Ciudad de León" 2018. La competición nuevamente se disputó en forma de un torneo cuadrangular. Los cuatro jugadores participantes en este ocasión fueron Wesley So, Paco Vallejo, el joven talento indio Praggnanandhaa y el héroe local Jaime Santos. Finalmente, Wesley So se impuso a Paco Vallejo en el duelo de desempate en la modalidad de ajedrez relámpago. Y eso, a pesar de que Vallejo hubiese obtenido posiciones favorables en la mayoría de las partidas. So jugó aperturas poco habituales y eso no tuvo consecuencias a su favor en todos los casos, pero mostró una tenacidad tremenda y eso fue la clave de su éxito.
A Wesley So se le notaba el cansancio. Tal y como él mismo comentó el mismo en la rueda de prensa, se sentía un poco agotado tras haber disputado varios torneos muy exigentes casi sin pausa entre una competición y otra. Previamente al Magistral de León había compitiendo con la elite mundial en el Grand Chess Tour en Lovaina (Bélgica), donde ganó y París, donde ocupó el tercer puesto. A ver si las cuatro semanas que le quedan antes de partipar en la Copa Sinquefield en San Luis (EE. UU.) le servirán para cargarse las pilas y coger fuerzas suficientes para conquistar otro triunfo.
