Javokhir Sindarov se quedó con la victoria en el Torneo de Candidatos de Chipre con unas tranquilas tablas ante Anish Giri en la decimotercera ronda.
El jugador de 20 años de Taskent solo necesitaba un empate para garantizar el primer puesto y la clasificación para un match por el Campeonato del Mundo contra Gukesh Dommaraju a finales de este año. Afrontó la partida decisiva de la misma manera que había caracterizado todo su torneo: bien preparado, confiado, rápido en sus decisiones y dispuesto a apoyarse en un juego sólido y práctico.
Tras la apertura, Giri obtuvo una posición ligeramente más activa y parecía tener algunas opciones de generar oportunidades, pero Sindarov neutralizó las amenazas sin dificultad. La partida pronto derivó en un final de torres en el que las blancas no tenían posibilidades reales de victoria. El resultado de Sindarov en Chipre destaca en el contexto del formato moderno del Torneo de Candidatos. Jugadas catorce rondas, ha sumado seis victorias y ocho empates, alcanzando ya el mayor número de triunfos desde que se introdujo el formato cerrado a doble vuelta en 2013. Tras empatar su partida de la última ronda contra Wei Yi, logró además la puntuación más alta de esta era de los Candidatos, superando los 9½ puntos obtenidos por Ian Nepomniachtchi en Madrid 2022.
La actuación del campeón ha sido equilibrada con ambos colores, con tres victorias con blancas y tres con negras. A lo largo del torneo, ha derrotado al menos una vez a cinco de sus siete rivales, venciendo dos veces a Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, mientras que solo Matthias Bluebaum y Giri lograron hacer tablas con él en sus dos enfrentamientos.
El progreso de Sindarov en el ranking también ha sido significativo. Durante el torneo ha ganado 30,6 puntos de rating, ascendiendo al quinto puesto del escalafón mundial, ahora solo por detrás de Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana y su compatriota Nodirbek Abdusattorov. A diferencia de algunos de sus contemporáneos, el ascenso de Sindarov a la élite fue gradual y no repentino. Tras conseguir el título de gran maestro y superar los 2500 puntos Elo en 2018, necesitó más de tres años para romper la barrera de los 2600, algo que logró en diciembre de 2021. Pasaron otros dos años antes de superar los 2700, habiendo alcanzado brevemente los 2701 puntos en diciembre de 2023.
El año de explosión de Sindarov llegó en 2025: comenzó el año con un Elo de 2692 y lo terminó con el que hasta ese entonces fue el máximo de su carrera, 2726 puntos. Dos torneos clásicos resultaron decisivos. En el Gran Suizo, anotó 6½/11 y terminó a 1½ puntos de Giri, el ganador del torneo. El momento decisivo del año llegó en la Copa del Mundo de la FIDE, donde Sindarov permaneció invicto en las partidas clásicas y acabó conquistando el título, Tras derrotar a Wei Yi en la final, consiguiendo así su plaza en el Torneo de Candidatos.
