10/09/2017 – Ayer sábado, 9 de septiembre, al comienzo de la primera partida de la tercera eliminatoria (dieciseisavos de final) de la Copa del Mundo de Ajedrez, Anton Kovalyov acudió al tablero antes el comienzo de la ronda. Llevaba los mismos pantalones cortos, que también se había puesto durante la primera y segunda eliminatorias. El presidente de la ECU se acercó para rogarle que se pusiera otra cosa, que cumpliese con el código de vestimenta que figuraba en el contrato que habían firmado todos los jugadores. Kovalyov abandonó la sala de juego y no volvió. Tras 15 minutos, su oponente Maxim Rodshtein ganó la partida por incomparecencia del rival.

En principio, 32 jugadores iban a disputar la tercera eliminatoria de la Copa del Mundo, el sábado 9 de septiembre en el hotel Huanling en Tiflis. En el momento en el que se arrancaron los relojes, una persona no estaba en la sala: Anton Kovalyov. Iba a jugar contra Maxim Rodshtein. Kovalyov no apareció y tras 15 minutos, perdió la partida por incomparecencia.

¿Por qué perdió la partida Anton Kovalyov?
Anton Kovalyov había llegado a la sala de juego unos minutos antes del comienzo de la ronda.

El presidente de la ECU Zurab Azmaiparashvili, se dio cuenta de que Anton Kovalyov llevaba pantaloes cortos y le rogó ponerse otra cosa, que cumpliera con el código de vestimenta acordado con los jugadores en el contrato.
3. 13. 4. Se ruega que los jugadores tomen nota de las reglas de la FIDE C.01 (artcículo 8.1) con respeto a una apariencia digna en todo momento durante la Copa del Mundo.
C.01 (el artículo 8.1) del Manual FIDE constata lo siguiente:
La Comisión de Publicación, Información y Estadísticas (CHIPS) insiste en que los jugadores deben preocuparse más de su apariencia personal. La imagen de los jugadores de ajedrez debería ser digna y el detalle de vestirse bien, no solamente demuestra respeto ante el juego, sino también de cara a los patrocinadores o aquellos que podrían ser patrocinadores potenciales, para que noten que sus inversiones merecen la pena.
Por ejemplo, algunas federaciones han prohibido las chancletas o camisetas sin mangas. A aquellos jugadores que aparezcan con el pelo revuelto y graso, se les debería llamar la atención sobre ello y lo mismo con aquellos que se pongan vaqueros viejos y desgastados o ropa vulgar en general.

Tras el incidente, nos pusimos en contacto con Zurab Azmaiparashvili, quien declaró lo siguiente:

El árbitro jefe también acalaró que fue él quien había hablado con Anton Kovalyov primero y que Zurab Azmaiparashvili habló con él más tarde.

Kovalyov comentó que estaba muy enfadado y que prefería no hablar ahora. Que había hecho la reserva para el vuelvo de vuelta a casa y así fue como se marchó.
La tarde del sábado, Kovalyov publicó la siguiente declaración en su Facebook:
"I wanted to wait a little till I calm down, but I'm tired of seeing lies everywhere. So here's what happened:
The issue were not the shorts but how I was treated. I came to the game and was approached by the arbiter asking me to change (first time). I told him that I don't have pants with me, and then I noticed that I was playing black instead of white, which came as a surprise for me and asked him to check that. He and the other arbiters checked and confirmed to me that I'm playing with black, we talked a little and everything was fine. Then came Zurab, he was very agressive, yelling at me and using the racial slur "gypsy" to insult me, apart from mentioning several times that I will be punished by FIDE. I told him that I had asked before at the previous world cup if what I was wearing was OK and I was told by somebody from the organization that yes. Zurab, in a prepotent way, said he doesn't care, he's the organizer now. At this point I was really angry but tried not to do anything stupid, and asked him why he was so rude to me, and he said because I'm a gypsy.
So imagine this, the round is about to start, I'm being bullied by the organizer of the tournament, being assured that I will be punished by FIDE, yelled at and racially insulted. What would you do in my situation? I think many people would have punched this person in the face or at least insulted him. I decided to leave.
Worth pointing out, I didn't take any pants with me because I gained some weight and they were to tight. If the organization of the tournament would have warned me sooner I would have taken a cab to the mall and bought pants, without any problems whatsoever, but instead I was treated like garbage. I was too stressed out by the way I was treated and the threats of being punished by FIDE no matter what I do, so I choose to leave before I do anything stupid. Another point worth pointing out, Zurab never asked me to go and change, the conversation consisted of threats, insults, and agressive behavior from Zurab. He was clearly provoking me. I will not appeal anything. I am disgusted by this type of people. I don't want the money. I'm coming back home."

Punto 1: Reglamento
Creo que el jugador debe estar siempre atento y dominando todo el reglamento (la mayoría ni da mucha atención para ello) para evitar conflictos, y si hay artículos que no son muy claros, debe optar por la forma más segura, y así como en una el partido de ajedrez, no correr riesgos innecesarios. El resto son desdoblamientos consecuentes, desagradables con personas autoritarias, que pueden aprovecharse en una situación de exposición. Vale para en un próximo congreso FIDE establecer mejor las normas o vetar ese artículo. (Ya que en el corazón de la cuestión el respeto o falta de respeto no está en la ropa, sino en quien las viste).
Punto 2: Arbitraje
La conducción de un torneo por un buen arbitraje y dirección debe pasar transparentemente (como casi no se ha habido), para que el punto principal (partidos), sean el foco.
No se conduce elegantemente a un jugador, muestra autoritarismo y no justicia. El hecho de no percibir en ruedas anteriores vestimentas inadecuadas, no anulan el reglamento, pero muestra falta de cumplimiento de las reglas por el arbitraje en las primeras rondas.
Punto 3: Jugador
En el caso de Kovalyov elegido para arreglar ropa y volver a la partida (lo que es más fácil práctico y barato que viajar en taxi y avión de vuelta), demostraría el repudio al arbitraje y podría entrar en recurso contra la torpeza dirección.
Punto 4: Enxadristas Profesionales
El apoyo entre los jugadores, coincidiría en la siguiente ronda, de todos ir de bermuda, como forma de protesta a una partida decidida en medios fuera del ajedrez.
Punto 5: Parcialidad
Los jugadores principales no se molestan con este tipo de situación. Hay que ver que muchas camisetas top (sport) están siendo vestidas, y podrían estar encuadradas como inadecuadas de la misma forma.
