El primer encuentro de Magnus Carlsen con los jugadores más grandes del mundo (o deberíamos decir el primer encuentro directo con ellos) se produjo a comienzos de 2004, en el torneo de ajedrez rápido de Reikiavik, en el que el querubín noruego de 13 años (así nos referíamos a él en aquellos tiempos) se enfrentó a dos antiguos campeones mundiales, ambos personalidades carismáticas. En este vídeo puede ver como fue la partida contra el otrora campeón mundial Anatoly Karpov. El chico de 13 años batió a la leyenda. En 1:25' Magnus enseña a su familia (padre Henrik, madre Sigrun y hermanas Ellen, Ingrid y Sigrun) el pulgar hacia arriba. Inmediatamente después puede oír una valoración del talento de Magnus por Karpov ("Juega como un adulto, produce ideas que son raras para un chico de su edad") Desafortunadamente, no hemos podido localizar la notación de esta histórica partida.
Enfrentamiento contra Kasparov
Al día siguiente de su victoria contra Karpov, Magnus Carlsen fue emparejado con el ex campeón del mundo Garry Kasparov, por entonces número uno del escalafón mundial.

que entiende que, desde el punto de vista de los medios, está en cuestión. Magnus en aquel momento estaba el 700 del mundo, mientras que Kasparov era el número uno. Nunca había jugado contra este joven.

En aquellos días, Almira Skripchenko noes estaba visitanto y comentó la partida.
La segunda partida (que también puede verse en el reproductor JavaScript de la parte superior) fue ganada por Kasparov, que pasó como una apisonadora sobre el chiquillo. Ese mismo año, posteriormente, visitó a Magnus en Oslo. El siguiente vídeo se gravó con ocasión de aquella sesión de entrenamiento.
