El "pastel de ajedrez" (chess pie), es un pastel que es típico para la zona Sur de los Estados Unidos de América. La mayoría de las fuentes conducen al libro de cocina de Martha Washington's Booke of Cookery and Booke of Sweetmeats. La ex primera dama compró este libro en Inglaterra donde fue publicado en el siglo 17, según informa la historiadora culinaria, Karen Loft Hess. Bobby Fischer ganó el Campeonato de EE. UU. 1963/64 con el marcador perfecto de 11/11 puntos. Tenía tan solo 20 años cuando el salió dicha hazaña. Nunca más se ha obtenido este resultado inmaculado en la historia del Campeonato de Ajedrez de EE. UU.
La décima partida, contra Pal Benko fue especialmente extraordinaria. Fue tan sobresaliente que tras la partida, le hicieron una tarta con una posición de la partida que Fischer recibió al final del torneo.
