Rakhmanov optó por la variante del cambio ante la Eslava de Kuzubov y ambos jugadores se esforzaron al máximo para hacer honor al nombre de esa variante. Ju Wenjung jugó un torneo fantástico en Dubái. Mediante unas rápidas tablas contra el GM eslovaco Peter Michalik en la ronda final, Ju se aseguró el tercer lugar (segundo al noveno puesto compartido) y mostró un rendimiento de 2683 puntos Elo, ganando 22,8 puntos Elo FIDE.
Viktor Laznicka vs. Salem A.R. Saleh Menos pacífico se mostró el GM checo Viktor Laznicka. Antes de la última ronda tenía 6/8 puntos y necesitaba una victoria para incorporarse a la cima. En una partida posicional de doble filo en la que Laznicka tenía ventajas estructurales y Saleh dinámicas, finalmente Laznicka logró imponerse y formó parte del grupo perseguidor con 7/9 puntos, al igual que Volkov y Ju Wenjun.
