El favorito del torneo, GM Rustam Kasimdzhanov tuvo la suerte de poder jugar una de sus propias aperturas en la primera ronda y jugaba con las piezas negras contra Mihail Marin. Pero Marin logró plantear algunas amenazas muy fuertes y finalmente logró ganar la partida con una horquilla de en la Defensa Francesa.
En el duelo holandés, Marijn van Delft perdió un caballo, pero se pudo aprovechar de un error de Robert Ris. Logró recuperar la pieza ligera y también ganó otra calidad.
En la última partida disputada entre Merijn van Delft y Mihail Marin, el holandés forzó varios intercambios de piezas. Eso tuvo como consecuencia uqe tras 17 movimientos, la partida tenía pinta igualada. Pero entonces llegó el movimiento 18.Axa7? y Marin (pero también Daniel King y Arne Kähler) pasaron por alto del movimiento ganador para las negras, 18...Ah6!
