Viktor Korchnoi (23 de marzo de 1931 – 6 de junio de 2016) fue uno de los grandes maestros más importantes del siglo XX y durante décadas fue considerado un serio aspirante al título de campeón del mundo. Formado en la Unión Soviética, pronto se consolidó entre la élite mundial, pero su carácter independiente lo llevó a entrar en conflicto, de manera cada vez más profunda, con las autoridades estatales.

En 1976 desertó hacia Occidente durante un torneo y posteriormente quedó apátrida, mientras su familia en la Unión Soviética fue objeto de represión. A pesar de estas dificultades personales, Korchnoi continuó compitiendo al más alto nivel hasta una edad avanzada.
Sus mayores logros llegaron como aspirante al título mundial frente a Anatoly Karpov en los matches por el Campeonato del Mundo de 1978 y 1981. Estos encuentros no solo fueron de altísimo nivel deportivo, sino que también estuvieron cargados de tensión política y fueron percibidos internacionalmente como un enfrentamiento simbólico entre la Unión Soviética y Occidente.
Korchnoi siguió activo en torneos hasta una edad muy avanzada y era conocido por su incansable espíritu de lucha, su fortaleza psicológica y su estilo de juego sin concesiones. Se le considera uno de los jugadores más fuertes de la historia que nunca llegaron a ganar el título mundial.

27/09/2024 – El periodo entre 1969 y 1980 fue bastante tumultuoso para la carrera de Viktor Korchnoi. A pesar de superar los 40 años, sin embargo, la pasión de Korchnoi por el ajedrez se mantuvo intacta y su nivel de juego siguió subiendo. Korchnoi comentó: “Un jugador no debe olvidar que el éxito no depende sólo de su preparación ajedrecística, sino también de su condición física. Si la energía de una persona disminuye, nunca tendrá éxito”.

Such a dynamic and popular opening as the Najdorf is developing the whole time. On this download, Daniel King updates lines that were included on his DVD but also responds to viewers’ requests, considering lines that he omitted from his original repertoire. The lines examined on this update are:
• 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6 6 h3 e5 7 Nde2
• 5….a6 6 Bc4 in combination with the English Attack (Be3, f3 etc)
• 5…a6 6 Be3 and the …a5 variation
• 5…a6 6 Be2 and 9 Re1
• 5 f3 (instead of 5 Nc3)
It isn’t necessary to have seen the original Najdorf DVD to understand the lines examined here – but it would help as they form part of a complete repertoire.
