Dos de los maestros afroamericanos más jóvenes de la historia, el estudiante de la Universidad Duke Kassa Korley y la sensación
mediática Justus Williams se vieron las caras en las semifinales. Justus Williams rompió el récord del propio Kassa al ser el nuevo gran maestro afroamericano más joven de la historia. Justus también es uno de aquellos cinco jugadores que salieron en la película documental Brooklyn Castle, que fue estrenado y galardonado en el Festival de Cine del Sur y del Suroeste (de los Estados Unidos de
América).

El otro duelo de las semifinales fue el encuentro entre el jugador de póker Alex Barnett y el estudiante de la Universidad de Stanford Elliott Liu. Ésta partida fue la más emocionante del
campeonato hasta ahora, con un espectacular ataque.
El Campeonato de Ajedrez Extremo ha sido ideado para ser emitido en la televisión
y demostrar el componente dramático que puede tener el ajedrez y los apuros que pueden surgir si alguien quiere dar jaque y mate cueste lo que cueste. La velocidad de esta competición
por eliminatorias conocida como "Xtreme Chess" (ajedrez extremo), se parece más al baloncesto que al golf. Cada jugador tan solo dispone de 20 minutos para realizar todos los movimientos. El
programa tiene el objetivo de aumentar la atención que recibe el ajedrez y
quiere demostrar que es algo que sirve para fascinar al púbico al verlo en la
tele.
El campeonato fue creado por el productor de películas Daniel Meirom, el fundador de la Liga Estadounidense de Ajedrez y MI Greg Shahade, además de la dos veces Campeona de EE.UU. Jennifer Shahade.
La presentadora del programa es la modelo y actriz Kacie Marie. ¡Jeopardy! Jonathan Corbblah, que ha salido en ESPN, Cash Cab y Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, se encarga de comentar las partidas de manera comprensible para todo el mundo junto con Jennifer Shahade. El acontecimiento se llevó a cabo en Chess-In-The-Schools, una empresa
sin ánimo de lucro de Nueva York.
