04/04/2023 – El GM indio de 17 años Leon Mendonca va de éxito en éxito. A principios de marzo ganó el Abierto de Bad Wörishofen y a finales de marzo se impuso en el Abierto HIT, en Nova Gorica, Eslovenia. En este último torneo, sumó 9 puntos de 9 posibles y mostró un rendimiento de 3196 puntos Elo. Mendonca juega para el club hamburgués Hamburger Schachklub en la Bundesliga Alemana y aprovechó su estancia en la ciudad hanseática para darnos uan visita en la oficina de ChessBase. Arne Kähler le ha entrevistado.

En el escalafón mundial de los mejores ajedrecistas juveniles de la FIDE, al primero de abril de 2023, Leon Mendonca ocupa el puesto 16º con una puntuación Elo actual de 2596, por detrás de Frederik Svane, su compañero de equipo en el Hamburger SK de la Bundesliga, que tiene 2600.
Mendonca nació el 13 de marzo de 2006 en Goa, India. Logró el título de maestro internacional en 2019, con 12 años, 11 meses y 3 días. Al año siguiente, en el torneo de GM de Rigochess, celebrado en Hungría en octubre de 2020, logró su primera norma de GM. La segunda norma le siguió solo tres semanas después, cuando ganó un torneo de GM en Budapest, y Mendonca recogió su tercera y última norma en diciembre de 2020, cuando terminó segundo en la Copa Vergani en Italia, asegurando el título de GM a la edad de 14 años, 9 meses y 17 días.
A pesar de esta carrera estelar, la victoria de Mendonca en el 27º Abierto HIT de Eslovenia es su mayor éxito hasta la fecha e incluso los mejores jugadores del mundo probablemente estarían encantados con una puntuación de 9 sobre 9 y una puntuación Elo de 3196 en un Abierto. Al final, el joven gran maestro indio aventajó en 2,5 puntos al GM Sabino Brunello, al GM Marko Tratar y al GM Aleksa Strikovic, que compartieron los puestos 2 a 4 con 6,5/9 cada uno.
