Abierto de Sídney 2011

03/05/2011 – Por muy lejos que esté Australia, la crisis económica también ha tenido sus efectos en este país continente. Poco faltó para que no se celebrase la edición de este año del Abierto de Sídney, pero gracias a la ayuda particular de varios amigos ajedrecistas australianos, finalmente el torneo sí pudo tener lugar. Una vez en las tierras de los canguros, muchos de los participantes de la Copa Doeberl, que se había disputado previamente en Camberra, acudieron después a Sídney. Tras 9 rondas, Akshat Khamparia, un jugador indio todavía no muy conocido resultó ser el ganador y los favoritos según el escalafón Elo, Arutnian y Deviatkin se clasificaron segundo y tercero. Del 27 de abril y el 1 de mayo, en Sídney (Australia)

El Abierto de Sídney se celebró entre el 27 de abril y el 1 de mayo, es decir, directamente a continuación del Abierto de Camberra. Estos dos torneos grandes, dan la posibilidad a los mejores jugadores de Australia a enfrentarse con fuertes jugadores internacionales en sus propias tierras.

En total participaron 69 jugadores en el torneo Abierto y en el "Challengers" fueron 52. El lugar del encuentro fue el Ayuntamiento de Paramatta, un bonito barrio de Sídney.
