21/12/2002 – Karpov se impuso a Kasaparov 2'5 - 1'5 (200.000 - 50.000 medido en dólares) en el match de partidas rápidas celebrado en Nueva York. Con 51 años, parece haber encontrado el elixir de la juventud, a tenero de sus resultados en los últimos tiempos. Karpov ganó la tercera partida y congeló el resultado en la cuarta.
