En la partida entre Etienne Bacrot y Ding Liren, el chino, al igual que en la primera ronda, optó por la Defensa India de Rey. Tras el movimiento 5.h3 de Bacrot, surgió una partida de gran calibre con el típico centro fijado y el juego por los flancos que provoca esa apertura. Durante mucho tiempo la partida permanecía en el aire, pero atacar con el rey negro por su flanco para ganar un peón resultó ser demasiado para la posición del chino. Bacrot se hizo con el control de la partida y finalmente obtuvo una posición ganadora.
Alexander Moiseenko venció con negras a Richard Rapport, pero admitió que no había salido muy bien de la apertura. El joven húngaro había optado por la Variante Rossolimo en la Siciliana. Con 12...g5, Moiseenko se desvió de las estructuras habituales en una variante que se ha jugado a menudo y tomó otras decisiones dudosas posteriormente. En el movimiento 24, Repport sacrificó un peón de manera innecesaria, pero no consiguió su meta y cayó derrotado.
Ian Nepomniachtchi planteó un tratamiento contundente a la Defensa Grünfeld de Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, lanzándose al ataque ya en el movimiento 5. h2-h4, una idea de ajedrez de café que Alexander Morozevich ha jugado a menudo en los últimos tiempos, y asustando con ella a Alexander Grischuk y a Magnus Carlsen en el Torneo de Candidatos. El francés, sin embargo, no se asustó y respondió a lo clásico con un contraataque por el centro (6...c5) y pronto había conseguido ventaja de desarrollo. Al entrar en el final de la partida, conquistó un peón y supo aprovechar esa ventaja en un final de alfiles para apuntarse la victoria.
