El tema del duelo entre los dos franceses fue la Apertura Inglesa. Vachier-Lagrave, con blancas, optó por 8.b3, un movimiento que Kramnik había jugado contra él en el torneo de París/San Petersburgo. Tras un sacrificio de calidad posicional, las blancas tenían una importante ventaja de desarrollo y eran capaces de ejercer mucha presión. Pero finalmente no pudo hacer valer su ventaja al entrar en el final y la partida concluyó en tablas.
El saque de honor en el tablero de Vachier-Lagrave y Bacrot
Alexander Moissenko reaccionó a la Defensa Grünfeld de Nepomniachtchi con un ataque por el flanco, b2-b4, algo que no se suele ver a menudo. A continuación el joven ruso ya abandonó los terrenos conocidos y jugó 6...Cc6. A lo largo de la partida, las negras consiguieron igualar por completo. Tras el cambio de torres y de dos parejas de piezas menores, la partida también terminó en empate por repetición de jugadas.
El apretón de manods entre Moiseenko y Nepomniachtchi
Ding Liren, en la tercera partida del torneo, volvió a jugar la Defensa India de Rey, pero en esta ocasión conduciendo las piezas blancas. Como consecuencia de la Defensa Benoni, surgió una posición del Ataque de los Cuatro Peones. A continuación, las blancas atacaron con sus peones g y h, pero sin éxito. Tras el cambio de la mayoría de las piezas menores, finalmente Richard Rapport, con negras, tenía una posición ventajosa, pero dejó escapar la mejor oportunidad para alzarse con la victoria. Tras algunas imprecisiones por parte de ambos jugadores surgió un final de damas igualado y la partida concluyó en tablas.
El 22 de julio ha comenzado el XLVI Festival de Ajedrez de Biel,
que en esta ocasión contará con la participación de Bacrot,
Vachier-Lagrave, Rapport, Nepomniachtchi, Liren y Moiseenko, en la
sección magistral, con cuatro jugadores nuevos que debutarán en el
cerrado.
