Tras lograr una posición ganadora en la octava partida del duelo, Ding Liren se dejó escapar varias posibilidades en una posición ganadora, y tuvo que conentarse con unas tablas. Ian Neponiachtchi sigue al mando, ahora con 4,5:3,5 puntoserrores y permitió l, permitiendo a Nepomniachtchi hacer tablas y mantenerse en cabeza en la carrera por el 17º campeón mundial de ajedrez. El resultado es 4,5: 3,5 para Nepomniachtchi.

En un sorprendente giro de acontecimientos, Ding Liren desperdició varias oportunidades en una posición ganadora y acabó jugando por unas tablas en la octava partida del duelo por el Campeonato del Mundo de Ajedrez de la FIDE.
En una Defensa Nimzo-India, Ding Liren sorprendió a su rival con una variante agresiva, sacrificando una pieza para atacar así al rey negro. Nepomniachtchi fue sorprendido y tenía baja la guardia. En un momento crítico de la partida, cometió un error al intercambiar un alfil por un caballo en e4 en el movimiento 22, entrando en una posición perdedora. En ese momento, sin embargo, Ding tomó varias decisiones equivocadas, desperdiciando en última instancia su enorme ventaja.

A pesar de las repetidas oportunidades que Nepomniachtchi le sirvió en bandeja de plata, Ding no supo aprovechar ninguna de ellas. Cuando ambos alcanzaron el primer control de tiempo, la posición estaba igualada, pero visualmente era más peligrosa para las blancas. El impulso cambió, y Nepomniachtchi pareció ganar confianza al sentir que Ding perdía el control de la partida.

Al final, Ding logró encontrar jugadas sólidas para simplificar la posición hasta un final de torres igualado.
Tras cuatro horas y media de juego y 45 jugadas, la partida concluyó en tablas.
Fueron los propios errores de Ding los que le llevaron a la derrota, pero el ingenio de Nepomniachtchi para encontrar brillantes defensas como 31...¡Dh4! y 37...¡Cxf2! también merecen crédito por este resultado, que le permite mantenerse en cabeza.
En palabras del comentariasta, GM Daniil Dubov: "Los jugadores han estado jugando hoy a la ruleta... No me parece que ésta hubiese sido la última oportunidad de Ding de ganar una gema en el duelo".
La novena partida del match tendrá lugar el viernes 21 de abril a las 15:00, hora de Astaná.
