Las reglas son fáciles, pero también tienen su truco. La partida en si es una partida de ajedrez ortodoxo, con las reglas de siempre. Pero el lugar del encuentro es algo peculiar: se juega en el fondo de una piscina.
Para poder jugar al ajedrez-buceo, se necesita un tablero especial que sirve para jugar en el fondo de la piscina. El agua no debe cubrir mucho para que los jugadores se puedan poner de pie entre los movimientos.
Hay partidas informales en muchos sitios en muchos momentos, pero también existe un "Campeonato del Mundo de Ajedrez Buceo" que se disputa a ritmo anual. En 2015 (en la foto de arriba) se disputó en el Gimnasio Third Space del Soho, en Londres
El límite de tiempo para rumiar cada movimiento dura solo el tiempo que el jugador pueda mantener la respiración. Si se queda sin aire tiene que mover alguna pieza a la fuerza antes de subir para respirar. Después le toca al oponente.
Esa modalidad conlleva ciertos aspectos tácticos interesantes. Otra regla es que hay que bajar a bucear inmediatamente cuando haya subido el oponente. Por esa razón, una manera de forzar al oponente a que juegue rápido es jugar rápido uno mismo para que el otro tenga menos tiempo para oxigenarse.
Otro aspecto técnico es el de utilizar pesas. Aunque se pudiera pensar que pasar 15- 20 segundos bajo el agua no es tan difícil, se puede convertir en un reto mayor si hay que esforzarse en mantenerse bajo el agua. Incluso bucear hacia abajo y aguantar la rspiración puede ser cansado tras poco tiempo. Y encima tener que jugar al ajedrez...
En el Campeonato del Mundo de Ajedrez Buceo 2016, Rajko Vutatovic comentó que algunos de sus rivales intentaron meterle presión al jugar muy rápido. Imagínese que estuviese aguantando la respiración durante un minuto para calcular su movimiento y tras cinco segundos arriba, tomando un soplo desesperado de aire, tiene que volver a bajar...

En la edición de este año, la medalla de oro fue compartida por Rajko Vujatovic y Etan Ilfeld. Ambos sumaron cuatro victorias y un empate (en la partida que jugaron entre si) La medalla de bronce, también compartida, fue para James Heppell y Paul Rosario.

Etan IlfeldEtan Ilfeld vive en londres y es autor del libro "Beyond Contemporary Art" de arte contemporáneo, abarcando temas que se extienden desde la ciencia, hasta el diseño, la arquitectura, los nuevos medios, producción de películas y arte de performance. Además a Ilfeld le encantan los juegos de estrategia. Ganó el Campeonato del Mundo de Póker para Aficionados en los Juegos Olímpicos de la Mente 2010 y es el inventor del "ajedrez buceo". Actualmente es el organizador principal de la Olimpiada de los Juegos Olímpicos de la Mente.
