El español mantuvo una lucha épica con Topalov hasta llegar a la última partida del desempate por muerte súbita. En el campeonato femenino, las cuatro chicas de oro son Alexandra Kosteniuk, (que venció a Almira Skripchenko-Lautier), Chiburdanidze, Zhu Chen y Xu Yuhua.
