Volvió a jugar 1.d4 y Anand no vio motivo para desviarse de su apertura de la segunda partida, con lo cual nuevamente surgió la Chebanenko de la Defensa Eslava del Gambito de Dama, aunque tras un minúsculo pero efectivo cambio de jugadas. El campeón se desvió jugando 12...exd4. A continuación se cambiaron los peones centrales y la única ventaja que Gelfand logró sacar fue la pareja de alfiles, exigua en una posicón tan simétrica. Después de cambiar damas y alfiles, Gelfand seguía con una mínima ventaja académica en el final de torre y alfil vs. torre y caballo, pero insuficiente para ganar.
