Centenario de la Federazione Scacchistica Italiana
La Federación Italiana de Ajedrez fue fundada el 20 de septiembre de 1920, en Varese (a 50 kilómetros de Milán). El primer presidente fue el maestro italiano Luigi Miliani (Venezia, 1875-1944). Cuando se fundó la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE) en 1924, la Federación Italiana formaba parte de los miembros fundadores.
A lo largo de los cien años de existencia de la Federazione, ha habido diversos acontecimientos dignos de mencionar.
Entre los años 1928 y 1934, la Federación Italiana formaba parte del Comité Nacional Olímpico (CONI) pero fue excluido más adelante.
La Federación Italiana se incorporó y lleva formando parte del CONI desde el año 1988. Hoy en día, el ajedrez cuenta como "deporte" oficial en Italia. En 1945, el ajedrez había sido declarado como actividad "digna de apoyar" por el Ministerio de Arte y Cultura.
Hoy en día, el ajedrez suele ser asignatura en casi todos los colegios para niños entre 7 y 14 años.
La Federación Italiana ha organizado diversos torneos y acontecimientos durante los primeros cien años de su existencia, por ejemplo, el Torneo Internacional de Reggio Emilia (con más de 50 ediciones consecutivas), el Campeonato del Mundo Karpov vs. Korchnoi en Meran en 1981 y la Olimpiada de Ajedrez en Turin 2006.
Actualmente, en Italia hay 16 grandes maestros y 46 maestros internacionales. Durante una temporada, Fabiano Caruana era el mejor jugador de Italia. Mientras tanto ha cambiado de Federación y es miembro de la Federación Estadounidense de Ajedrez.
El mejor jugador de Italia actualmente es GM Daniele Vocaturo, la mejor jugadora femenina es Olga Zimina.
El campeón récord de Italia es Stefano Tatai con doce títulos nacionales. En 1938 se disputó el primer Campeonato Femenino de Italia y la campeona récord es Rita Gramignani, con nueve títulos.
La tradición ajerecística, naturalmente es aún más antigua que la federación. Una de las tradiciones relacionadas con el ajedrez italiano es el ajedrez viviente de Marostica.
