18/12/2023 – Arjun Erigaisi logró su primera victoria del torneo Chennai Masters contra Alexandr Predke en la tercera ronda del Gran Masters de Chennai 2023. Tras perder la primera ronda contra Harikrishna, Arjun se encontraba prácticamente en una situación en la que debía ganar para seguir en la lucha por el campeonato y mantener sus opciones en el circuito de la FIDE. Predke cometió un error posicional que permitió a su rival forzar el cambio de dama. Un error mutuo entre Harikrishna y Eljanov permitió al primero salvar medio punto mediante un jaque continuo. Gukesh alcazó unas tablas relativamente tranquilas en su partida con Parham Maghsoodloo.

Previamente a esta, la única partida valorada se había disputado a principios de este año entre la GM Pentala Harikirshna y la GM Pentala Eljanov que terminó en tablas en el Campeonato del Mundo de Rápidas por Equipos. La última partida decisiva entre ambos se disputó en 2019.
Las blancas deberían haber capturado en b5 aquí, con 26.Axb5. En lugar de ello, optaron por el atrevido 26.Axh7+? algo que habría sido correcto siempre y cuando las negras hubiesen jugado correctamente. Por suerte de las blancas, el oponent no lo logró. 26...Rxh7 27.Dh4+ Rg8 28.Th5 f5 29.Th8+ Rf7 30.Dh5+ Rf6?? Las negras cometieron un error. 30...Dg6 habría sido ganador para las blancas. 31.Te7+ Rf6 32.De2 Txh8 33.De5+ Rg7 34.Txg7 fue la única manera que le parecía posible a Harikrishna servir para continuar con la lucha. Las blancas obtuvieron la oportunidad de forzar jaque continuo: 31.Th6+ gxh6 32.Dxh6+ Rf7 33.Dh7+ Rf6 34.Dh6+ Rf7 y la partida concluye en tablas.
