Torneo de Candidatos 2020/2021
El Torneo de Candidatos con ocho jugadores, cuyo ganador será el nuevo retador del Campeón del Mundo Magnus Carlsen por la corona mundial, se reanudará y disputará entre el 19 de abril y el de 2021 en Ekaterinburgo (Rusia).
Ritmo de jugeo: 100 minutos/40 movimientos, más 50 minutos/20 movimientos, más 15 minutos por el resto de la partida, con un incremento de 30 segundos por movimiento, a partir del primer movimiento.
A la rueda de prensa antendieron Anatoly Karpov, Leonid Rapoport (Ministro de Cultura y Deportes), Dana Reizniece-Ozola (FIDE), Victor Bologan (FIDE), Albert Stepanyan (director del torneo de Candidatos) y Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

Clasificación tras 7 rondas
Las partidas de las rondas 1 - 7
El torneo a doble ronda, había comenzado el año pasado, el día 16 de marzo de 2020. Sin embargo, debido a la problemática de la pandemia del coronavirus, once días más tarde tuvo que ser suspendido.
Dado que la mitad de las rondas ya han sido disputadas, la interrupción ha creado una situación nunca visto. Las reglas del torneo determinan que los puntos acumulados hasta la fecha, siguen contando y que el torneo se reanundará donde había sido interrumpido en lugar de comenzar otra vez desde cero. En el momento que el torneo quedó interrumpido, el jugador francés Maxime Vachier-Lagrave y rel ruso Ian Nepomniachtchi compartían el mando con 4,5/7 puntos. Fabiano Caruana (EE. UU.), Anish Giri (Holanda), Wang Hao (China) y Alexander Grischuk (Rusia) iban con 3,5/7 puntos. Ding Liren y Kirill Alekseenko habían sumado 2,5/7 puntos.
Tras un largo tiempo de espera, el próximo día 28 de abril de 2021 se sabremos, quién será el próximo retador del Campeón del Mundo, Magnus Carlsen. (A no ser que haya más contratiempos.)
