Elisabeth Pähtz ha comenzado con mal pie en la Copa Cairns. Tras su derrota en la primera ronda contra Alexandra Kosteniuk, ayer en la segunda sufrió otra más frente a Bela Khotenashvili.
Al comienzo de la partida Elisabeth Pähtz jugaba bastante animada con negras en una posiciäon cerrada tras una apertura con el peón de dama. Pero al final tenía una posición inferior durante la fase final de la partida.
Con el movimiento 38... Tb8 las negras jugaron el final perdió la partida tras la pérdida del peón a5. Habría sido más favorable jugar 38...Tf8 para mantener la torre sobre el tablero para así igual poder luchar por unas tablas en un final de torres.

En el duelo en la cima, se vieron las caras aquellas dos jugadoras que habían ganado sus respectivas partidas en la primera ronda, Valentina Gunina eIrina Krush. Valentina Gunina puso a Irina Krush con la espalda contra la pared.
Gunina tendría que haber sacrificado calidad, pero aún así tenía esperanzas para lanzar un contraataque por el flanco del Rey. Amanazaría, por ejemplo, 45.Df7. Con el movimiento 44...Db2 aún así las negras podrían haber terminado la faena: 45.Df7 Th2 46.Rg4 De2 y habría ganado. En lugar de ello, las negras optaron por un intercambio de las damas con 44... Dc1 En el final que surgió tras 45.Cf8 Rg8 46.Cxe6 etc., ya no tenía ninguna ventaja y hasta tenía que jugar con cuidado para poder mantener las tablas.
Anna Zatonskih igualmente se dejó escapar la victoria en su partida contra Alexandra Kosteniuk.
El final el rey blanco se había desplazado a f4. Las negras jugaron 32...g6 y más adelante, la partida concluyó en tablas.

La partida Marie Sebag vs. Zhansaya Abdumali concluyó en tablas por jaque continúo. Harika Dronavalli y Nana Dzagnidze igualmente firmaron las paces.
