La Copa del Mundo de Ajedrez se disputará mediante un torneo por eliminatorias con 128 participantes al inicio. En cada eliminatoria se disputan dos partidas a ritmo lento FIDE (90 minutos para 40 movimientos, más 30 minutos para el resto de la partida, más 30 segundos de incremento por movimiento). En caso de empate, se disputarían dos partidas de ajedrez rápido (25 minutos, más 10 segundos de incremento) y de ser necesario, a continuación dos partidas de ajedrez rápido con tiempo reducido (10 minutos, más 10 segundos de incremento) Si todavía persistiese el empate, habría dos partidas de ajedrez relámpago (5 minutos, más 3 segundos) En último caso se jugaría una partida a todo o nada: las blancas tienen 5 minutos y deben ganar para pasar la eliminatoria, mientras que las negras disponen de 4 minutos, pero les basta mantener las tablas para lograr el objetivo. En la final se disputarán 4 partidas a ritmo lento.
La ciudad de Tromsø está ubicada en el extremo norte de Noruega (69° 40' 33" N, 18° 55' 10" E), casi 400 km dentro del Círculo Polar Ártico (que se encuentra a 66° 33' 39" al norte del Ecuador)

En la Copa del Mundo en Tromsø (Noruega) participa la flor y nata de la elite mundial de ajedrez. De los 46 jugadores que tienen valoraciones superiores a los 2700 puntos Elo, están inscritos 38. Sin embargo hay dos ausencias notables, aunque comprensibles: el Campeón del Mundo de Ajedrez Vishy Anand y su retador Magnus Carlsen. Ellos se enfrentarán en un duelo directo por el título mundial en noviembre de este año.
En cuanto a la participación femenina, cabe destacar que se presentarán Judit Polgar, Yifan Hou, la campeona mundial Anna Ushenina y la peruana Deysi Cori.
El sistema de emparejamientos de la FIDE requiere que se enfrenten el primer favorito según su Elo con el que menos puntos Elo tiene (el segundo contra el penúltimo, etc.) Suena brutal y lo es, pero en el pasado se ha registrado más de una sorpresa en los torneos por eliminatorias, cuando de repente un jugador prácticamente desconocido eliminó a alguna de las estrellas. Quizá Alexei Shirov no esté muy contento con su oponente. Ya ha perdido contra Hou Yifan, por ejemplo, en el Abierto de Gibraltar.
