Jugando con blancas, el prodigio indio de 18 años, R Praggnanandhaa, no pudo establecer una ventaja significativa sobre el ex campeón mundial Carlsen. Mientras tanto, Fabiano Caruana sufrió una sorprendente derrota contra el jugador local Nijat Abasov en el encuentro por el tercer puesto.
Magnus Carlsen y R Praggnanandhaa repartieron el punto tras una partida que duró 35 movimientos y unas tres horas.
En la variante de los cuatro caballos de la apertura Inglesa, R Praggnanandhaa (con blancas) optó por una variante aguda, presionando en el flanco de dama, pero Carlsen respondió con un contraataque en el centro y empató cómodamente. En una posición igualada, con tres peones en el flanco de rey y un caballo y una torre cada uno, decidieron dar por concluida la partida.
Tras la partida, Magnus Carlsen explicó que no se sentía bien debido a una intoxicación alimentaria. A pesar de este contratiempo de salud, el rendimiento de Carlsen sobre el tablero siguió siendo formidable. Firmó tablas con Praggnanandhaa.
La disputa por el tercer puesto
En el duelo por el tercer puesto, Fabiano Caruana sufrió una derrota a manos de Nijat Abasov, al cometer un error crítico en la fase final de la partida.

En una apertura catalana, la posición había estado igualada hasta la jugada 16, cuando las blancas (Abasov) empezaron a tener más iniciativa. Abasov procedió entonces a organizar un ataque contra la fortaleza del rey negro, pero Caruana fue capaz de defenderse. Desafortunadamente, Caruana cometió un error crucial en el movimiento 23, encontrándose en una posición perdida inmediatamente. Tres jugadas más adelante, se rindió.

Por segunda vez en la historia, se disputa una Copa del Mundo Femenina al mismo tiempo que la ya tradicional Copa del Mundo de la FIDE. Las eliminatorias se celebran del 30 de julio al 27 de agosto en el Marriott Hotel Boulevard de Bakú (Azerbaiyán).
Los tres mejores jugadores se clasificarán para el Torneo de Candidatos de la FIDE de 2024 en ambas secciones.
Todos los encuentros consisten en dos partidas clásicas con un control de tiempo de 90 minutos para 40 movimientos, más 30 minutos hasta el final de la partida, más un incremento de 30 segundos desde el movimiento 1.
En caso de empate, se juega un desempate el tercer día de la ronda respectiva.
