En la primera partida de la primera fase eliminatoria, la mayoría de los favoritos lograron ganar sus respectivas partidas. Once de los dieciseis favoritos se apuntaron victorias. La sorpresa más inesperada fue la victoria del noruego Johan-Sebastian Christiansen jugando con negras contra Radoslaw Wojtaszek.
