11/01/2004 – En la primera ronda saltó la sorpresa al encajar Vladimir Kramnik una derrota frente al armenio Akopian (Foto). El resto de las partidas del grupo A terminó en tablas. Tras una batalla teórica sobre la variante Najdorf de la Siciliana, Kramnik se cargó de tiempo conduciendo las negras para intentar igualar.
