Cubas se impuso con las piezas negras al joven peruano Cornejo (en la foto), mientras que Zambrana, también con negras, batió al GM uruguayo Andrés Rodríguez. Cubas y Zambrana lideran tras la 4ª ronda del grupo principal.
Grupo A
Cornejo 0 – Cubas 1 fue una Defensa Escandinava donde las negras no tuvieron problemas en igualar, después cobraron ventaja, ganando un peón y finalmente lograron la victoria en un final de torres bien jugado.
En Coelho ½ - Luján½ se jugó la Variante del Fianchetto contra la Defensa Indo Benoni; se siguió el curso Avrukh – Kamsky, Khanty Mansyisk 2.007, considerado satisfactorio para las negras, sin que la evaluación cambiara; en el medio juego la posición se complicó y se llegó a un final donde las negras, con una leve ventaja, repitieron la posición 3 veces, sin percatarse de ello.
Soppe - Brito fue una Defensa Benoni, en la que las blancas lograron ventaja posicional, agravada cuando Brito cedió el control de la columna a con 25…Tb8? en vez de 25…Ta8; Soppe fue mejorando paulatinamente su posición, para terminar imponiéndose en un final de alfiles.
En Vera ½ - Bachmann½ se jugó una de las líneas críticas del Ataque Yugoeslavo de la Defensa India del Rey, donde las blancas sacrifican un peón con 14.c5, la partida tuvo el carácter violento típico de la variante, las blancas entregaron un caballo, para llevar la lucha al ala dama, pero no fue aceptado; tras una compleja lucha con sendas entregas de calidad, la partida terminó en empate.
Rodríguez 0 – Zambrana 1 fue una Defensa Siciliana Variante Sveshnikov, las blancas intentaron un ataque al enroque negro, pero sin precisión, y quedaron con sus piezas descoordinadas al permitir un fuerte contraataque en el ala dama, y las negras se impusieron con contundencia.
