El Campeonato de Europa es un torneo suizo a 11 rondas. El control de tiempo es de 90 minutos para las primeras 40 jugadas, seguido de 30 minutos hasta el final de la partida, con incrementos de 30 segundos por jugada desde el inicio de la partida.
Un total de 375 jugadores se han registrado para participar. Bogdan-Daniel Deac, Alexey Sarana y Jorden van Foreest son los favoritos por rating.
Los organizadores ofrecen una bolsa de premios de €100,000, con €20,000 reservados para el ganador del torneo. Quizás aún más importante para los mejores jugadores es la oportunidad de clasificarse para la próxima Copa del Mundo de la FIDE. Los 20 mejores jugadores obtienen un pase para el torneo eliminatorio de la FIDE, en el que tres jugadores ganarán un pase para el Torneo de Candidatos.
