El Campeonato Europeo es un torneo abierto jugado bajo el formato suizo a 11 rondas. El control de tiempo es de 90 minutos para las primeras 40 jugadas, seguido de 30 minutos hasta el final de la partida, con incrementos de 30 segundos desde el inicio de la partida.
Un total de 501 jugadores se han registrado para participar en el evento. Igor Kovalenko, David Antón y Bogdan-Daniel Deac son los favoritos por rating.
Los organizadores ofrecen una bolsa total de premios de €100.000, de los cuales €20.000 corresponden al ganador del torneo. Quizá aún más importante para los competidores es la posibilidad de clasificarse para la próxima edición de la Copa del Mundo de la FIDE. Los 20 primeros obtienen una plaza para el torneo eliminatorio, en el que tres jugadores pueden conseguir un lugar en el Torneo de Candidatos.
