Pia Cramling nació el 23 de abril de 1963 en Estocolmo. Tiene un hermano mayor que tiene cuatro años más que ella. Se llama Dan Cramling y Pia siempre le ha admirado mucho. Cuando era niña, su admiración llegaba a tal punto que procuraba imitar todo lo que hacia. Cuando Dan comenzó a jugar al ajedrez, la pequeña Pia también quiso. Su hermano la llevó al club de ajedrez "Passanten", en Huddinge. Entonces Pia tenía 10 años. A los 12 años comenzó a participar en torneos de ajedrez.
Cuando tenía 15 años, ya comenzó a formar parte del equipo nacional femenino de Suecia y en 1978 participó en la primera Olimpiada de Ajedrez de su carrera, en Buenos Aires. Pia sumó 9 puntos en 11 rondas y fue la mejor jugadora en el cuarto tablero de aquella competición. En aquel entonces, las olimpiadas se solían disputar con fases clasificatorias. El equipo femenino de Suecia llegó hasta la Final B y en ella ocupó el primer puesto.
En los años siguientes, Pia Cramling participó en otras siete olimpiadas de ajedrez con el equipo sueco: 1982, 1984, 1988, 2004, 2008, 2014 y 2016. Entre los años 1990 y 2000 Pia Cramling formó parte del grupo de los mejores ajedrecistas suecos y se incorporó al equipo absoluto de Suecia. Luchó codo con codo con los hombres en las olimpiadas de 1990, 1992, 1996 y 2000.

En una entrevista, Pia Cramling mencionó su primer encuentro con su gran ídolo, Viktor Kortschnoi. En 1982, cuando Pia Cramling tenía 19 años, se enfrentó con él en el Abierto Lloyds Bank. La partida concluyó en tablas, pero la verdad es que Viktor "El Terrible" la debería haber perdido:
La sueca también fue la primera mujer de la historia en competir en la sección absoluta de la Bundesliga Alemana (máxima competición por equipos alemana).
Más adelante, Pia participó en diversos torneos y campeonatos en España, Inglaterra y Francia.
En enero de 1984, Pia Cramling fue la mejor ajedrecista con una valoración Elo de entonces 2405 puntos. Sus rivales más serias entonces eran Maia Chiburdanidze, Nana Alexandria y Nona Gaprindashvili.
Durante una temporada, Pia Cramling vivió en España con su marido, el gran maestro español Juan Manuel Bellón Lopez y la hija de los dos, Anna. Hoy en día los Cramling tienen su residencia en Suecia.
