Timur Gareyev es un gran maestro de ajedrez originario de Uzbekistán. Ha mantenido el puesto de tercer jugador con el Elo más alto de EE.UU. y también está situado entre los cien mejores del mundo, con un máximo de 2780 puntos Elo de la federación estadounidense. Se le conoce singularmente por jugar ajedrez a la ciega, que es una variante en la que no se tiene a la vista ni el tablero, ni la posición de las piezas sobre el mismo. Timur ha participado en miles de partidas a la ciega, en simultáneas clásicas, competiciones por Internet y partidas en consulta. En mayo de 2013 participó en una exhibición de simultáneas a la ciega contra 33 tableros en el Campeonato de EE.UU. en San Luis. Duró un poco más de 10 horas y terminó con 29 victorias, 4 tablas y ninguna derrota. El 31 de julio de 2015, Timur hizo historia al establecer una nueva mejor marca mundial al jugar ajedrez a la ciega por parejas con el vigente campeón mundial de ajedrez a la ciega Marc Lang. Su meta actual es batir el record mundial jugando 50 partidas a la ciega de forma simultánea. Su entrenamiento consistirá en miles de horas de preparación. Timur en la actualidad está en una gira mundial, preparándose para el reto. Tiene un espíritu aventurero y posee licencia de paracaidismo y salto base. Disfruta viajando y conociendo gente. Se mantiene en forma caminando y practicando yoga. Trabaja activamente en las escuelas y centros de enseñanza del ajedrez en Las Vegas, Austin y Kansas. Es asesor de la Escuela Internacional de Ajedrez Karpov y ha desarrollado un programa de enseñanza virtual del ajedrez que se ofrece a las escuelas de todo Estados Unidos. Timur es autor de un libro de ejercicios de táctica llamado “C.A.T. Tactics” y está trabajando en un nuevo libro que se titula “Get Off the Couch and Play Chess” (“Deja al entrenador y juega al ajedrez”)
