Por razones que no explicó, Hikaru Nakamura no quiso luchar con negras frente a David Antón, que tiene 185 puntos Elo menos que el estadounidense, y el empate se firmó tras sólo 16 jugadas. Ese decepcionante desenlace, que contrasta con las tablas tras lucha feroz entre los compatriotas y amigos Véselin Topálov e Iván Cheparínov, mantiene a ambos arriba, ahora junto al francés Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, que tumbó a Michael Adams, y el chino Yangyi Yu. La campeona del mundo, Yifán Hou, produjo una partida inmortal.
Tras ese inesperado descanso de ayer, Antón repite blancas hoy frente a Vachier-Lagrave, a quien no se ha enfrentado nunca, mientras Nakamura repite negras frente a Yu en la segunda mesa. Otros enfrentamientos llamativos por razones especiales son el de las chinas Hu y Ju, números uno y dos del mundo, y el de la búlgara Stefánova (mejor mujer del torneo hasta ahora) frente a su compatriota y amigo Cheparínov.
El torneo abierto más fuerte del año produce tantas noticias que algunas muy interesantes pueden quedar eclipsadas. Por ejemplo, el prometedor rendimiento del español Lance Henderson, de 13 años, quien firmó su cuarto empate consecutivo frente a un gran maestro después de tener a Kevin Spraggett contra las cuerdas durante casi toda la partida. Previamente, el andaluz había empatado con los españoles Gabriel del Río y Marc Narciso, y el argentino Damián Lemos. Hoy se enfrenta a otro rival muy duro, el indio Gupta.
