Dmitri Shostakovich fue un pianista y compositor ruso y probablemente el último de los grandes compositores clásicos del siglo XX. También era aficionado al ajedrez.
Sergey Prokofiev era más que un simple aficionado y se podía considerar un fanático del ajedrez. Es uno de los grandes compositores del siglo XX, a la altura de Rachmaninoff, Ravel y Stravinsky.
Entre las muchas obras de Prokofiev está el Concierto para piano nº 3. Uno de sus favoritos. Aquí está interpretado por la legendaria pianista argentina Martha Argerich con la Orquesta Sinfónica de Londres dirigida por André Previn en 1977.
En 1937, los dos gigantes de la música Sergey Prokofiev y el violinista David Oistrakh jugaron un duelo del que se hicieron eco incluso las revistas soviéticas de ajedrez de la época.
Los músicos clásicos no son los únicos enamorados del ajedrez. A Dizzy Gillespie, uno de los más grandes trompetistas de jazz de todos los tiempos, se le podía ver con frecuencia disfrutando del juego.

Ray Charles cuya música trascendió a varias generaciones, nunca dejó que su ceguera fuese un problema y era un gran aficionado al ajedrez, que jugaba en cunato tenía oportunidad. En la imagen está jugando con su agente Taylor.

Ennio Morricone es el compositor de cientos de bandas sonoras, muechas de las cuales están consideradas entre las mejores de todos los tiempos. También era aficionado al ajedrez y participaba en torneos. Aquí posa junto a Judit Polgar, contra la que jugó en 2004. La partida está en Mega Database.

El rapero GZA del clan Wu-Tang también es conocido como un gran amante del ajedrez. En 2005, sacó un álbum completo dedicado al juego: "Grandmasters" (Grandes maestros). Todas las canciones tienen un título relacionado con el ajedrez: “Advanced Pawns” (Peones avanzados), “Illusory Protection” (Protección ilusoria) y “Queen’s Gambit” (Gambito de dama)
