El viernes pasado, 4 de septiembre de 2020, falleció el gran maestro moldavo, Dmitri Svetushkin. Al parecer cometió suicidio y saltó por la ventana desde el sexto piso de una casa en Chisinau. Svestushkin no ha dejado ninguna carta de despedida. Al día anterior aún había hablado por Skype con unos amigos que afirman que le notaban raro en absoluto.
Sus amigos le describen a Dmitri Svestushkin como persona muy afable y culta, con intereses muy diversas, por ejemplo estaba intentando aprender alemán para poder leer las obras de Johann Wolfgang von Goethe en su versión original. Hacia deportes, participaba incluso a competiciones de maratón y en una ocasión hasta participó en el "Ironman".
Dmitry Svetushkin, nacido el 25 de julio de 1980, era uno de los mejores jugadores de ajedrez de su país. Al igual que prácticamente todos los jugadores moldovos de su generación, era alumno de Vjacheslav Chebanenko. Svetushkin solía tener un estilo de juego sólido y posicional.
Dominaba especialmente bien los finales de partidas. En el año 2000 ganó el Campeonato de Moldavia. Entre los años 2000 y 2018 formaba parte del equipo nacional de Moldavia en diez olimpiadas de ajedrez.
Svetushkin participó en diversas competiciones por equipo internacionales.
En la Bundesliga Alemana jugaba con el club SG Trier y con el SK Heidelberg-Handschuhsheim.
Tenía título de gran maestro desde el año 2002. En 2014 Svetushkin recibió el título de entrenador FIDE y entrenaba a varios talentos moldavos de ajerez.
