10/09/2024 – Hoy, martes 10 de septiembre, a las 18:00 horas, dará comienzo la 45ª Olimpiada de Ajedrez de Budapest con la ceremonia inaugural. Para entrar en ambiente, vale la pena recordar otra Olimpiada, la celebrada en Salónica (Grecia) en 1988. El cómico, escritor, actor y aficionado al ajedrez inglés Stephen Fry hizo un documental sobre ella, ingenioso, entretenido, lleno de ironía y humor. Como dijo Fry: «Un acontecimiento que no me habría perdido por nada del mundo». Con numerosas entrevistas y extractos, Fry ofrece una visión del torneo y del ambiente de la Olimpiada. La Unión Soviética, con Garry Kasparov (8,5/10), Anatoly Karpov (8,0/10), Artur Jussupov (6,0/10), Alexander Beliavsky (7,0/10), Jaan Ehlvest (4,5/7) y Vassily Ivanchuk (6,5/9) ganó el oro, dejando a todos los demás equipos muy atrás. Consiguieron un total de 40,5 puntos, 6 puntos más que Inglaterra y Holanda, que sumaron 34,5 puntos.
Inglaterra jugaba con Nigel Short, Jonathan Speelman, John Nunn, Murray Chandler, Jonathan Mestel y William Watson, y este equipo es también el centro del documental. Pero Fry también deja hablar a celebridades como Garry Kasparov o Anatoly Karpov, a los que se puede admirar aquí en todo su vigor juvenil.
Una de las sensaciones de la Olimpiada de Ajedrez en Salónica, fue el equipo femenino húngaro, apodado «Polgaria» porque Zsuzsa, Judit y Sofia Polgar eran las tres hermanas Polgar del equipo. El cuarto miembro del equipo era Idliko Madl. Las jóvenes hermanas e Idliko Madl aguantaron la presión y relegaron a las favoritas de la Unión Soviética al segundo puesto. Hungría terminó con 33 puntos de tablero frente a medio punto menos de la Unión Soviética y, con 32,5 puntos de tablero, tuvo que conformarse con la plata.
La jugadora húngara con más éxito fue Judit Polgar, que entonces sólo tenía 12 años y obtuvo una puntuación casi perfecta de 12,5 sobre 13.
Pero en el documental de Fry los resultados son, en última instancia, secundarios. Fry, que es un ajedrecista apasionado y ha escrito sobre ajedrez en numerosos artículos y en muchos de sus libros, se ocupa sobre todo de captar el ambiente de la Olimpiada de ajedrez y, con ironía y leve burla, pintar un retrato de los muchos personajes pintorescos y enigmáticos que estuvieron allí en Salónica. Y, por supuesto, explorar la cuestión de por qué el ajedrez es tan fascinante.
