Robert Byrne pasa por ser uno de los más exitosos y conocidos grandes maestros de los EE.UU. en el siglo XX y ha contribuido mucho al ajedrez estadounidense. En 1972 ganó el Campeonato de EE.UU. y en 1974 se clasificó para los Torneos de Candidatos por el Campeonato del Mundo. Entre los años 1952 y 1976 formó parte del equipo olímpico de EE.UU. en nueve ocasiones. Entre 1972 y 2006 escribió la columna de ajedrez del New York Times.
Byrne había estudiado en la universidad de elite de Yale y fue profesor durante muchos en la Universidad de Indiana.
Robert Byrne y su hermano menor, Donald, se criaron en Nueva York y formaban parte de los "Collins Kids", un grupo de jóvenes talentos neoyorquinos, pupilos de John W. Collins. Otros pupilos de Collins fueron, por ejemplo, Larry Evans, Arthur Bisguier, George Kramer y Bobby Fischer.
Byrne falleció el 12 de abril de 2013, a la edad de 84 años tras haber padecido la enfermedad de Parkinson durante muchos años.

Robert Byrne fue un invitado bien visto en todos los torneos de ajedrez, pero tenía un enlace especial con el magistral de Reikiávik. Entre 1968 y 1986, Byrne participó en cinco ocasiones y también acudió al duelo por el campeonato del mundo entre Fischer y Spassky en 1972, como reportero especializado. El islandés Einar S. Einarsson, un gran promotor del ajedrez que también se encargó de ayudar a Bobby Fischer hasta que murió, escribe sobre Robert Byrnes: "Su aspecto cortés y educado y su manera fina de jugar nos quedarán grabados en la memoria para siempre.
