Hans Niemann alcanzó una puntuación máxima de 2708 en mayo de 2023, pero en noviembre bajó a 2659. Le siguieron una notable actuación en Zagreb y un rendimiento del cincuenta por ciento en el Chess Classic de Londres para terminar el año. A principios de 2024, Niemann sumó 7/13 puntos en el torneo Tata Steel Challengers, antes de compartir el primer puesto con Daniel Dardha en Djerba. Todos estos torneos le han dejado con una valoración Elo actual de 2676 en el escalafón FIDE para marzo de 2024.
En la sección principal del GRENKE Open, Niemann inicialmente había sido el quinto favorito , como uno de los 19 jugadores, partiendo con una puntuación igual o superior a los 2600. Su excelente actuación, con 7 victorias y 2 empates, le permitió conquistar el primer puesto tras ganar su partida de la última ronda a Velimir Ivic. Con este resultado, el joven de 20 años ganó 12,3 puntos Elo, lo que le permite ascender hasta el puesto 47 de la lista oficiosa continúa de Elo, con 2688 puntos Elo.
Niemann entró en la ronda final como uno de los seis colíderes, y fue emparejado contra Ivic (con las piezas negras) en el tablero 3. Se firmaron las paces en los dos primeros tableros, por lo que el pleno de puntos obtenido por Niemann le otorgó la victoria absoluta.
Tras obtener una ventaja estratégica en una posición sin dama con parejas de alfiles para ambos bandos, Niemann demostró una buena técnica para obtener su victoria final.
El peón pasado de las negras en la columna h está muy fuerte aquí, mientras que el movimiento de Ivic, 37.Th1 resultó ser demasiado pasivo. El gran maestro serbio se rindió seis movimientos más adelante.

Fue muy notable también la actuación de Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, quien sumó 7/9 puntos para convertirse en el cuarto gran maestro más joven de la historia, ya que obtuvo el título más prestigioso del ajedrez a la edad de 12 años, 9 meses y 29 días. El representante turco es también el GM más joven del mundo en estos momentos.
Tras comenzar el certamen con cuatro victorias consecutivas contra rivales de menor categoría, Erdogmus cosechó tablas contra Abhimanyu Mishra y contra Hans Niemann, a la postre vencedor del torneo. La única derrota sufrida por el joven jugador se produjo en la octava ronda, cuando fue derrotado por el primer cabeza de serie, Arjun Erigaisi.
Previamente, Erdogmus había ganado el Festival Juvenil de Ajedrez de Yida, superando a los compañeros prodigios Volodar Murzin y Raunak Sadhwani en un torneo cerrado con 10 jugadores por sistema de liga, a una vuelta.
