Xiong vuelve a ganar el Spring Classic
La ciudad de San Luis, Meca del ajedrez estadounidense, organizó otro excelente torneo: el Spring Classic, dos torneos magistrales con una mezcla interesante de jugadores en las nóminas.
El evento "A" alcanzó un rating promedio de 2653 y contó con la participación de dos grandes visitantes, Vassily Ivanchuk y Rustam Kasimdzhanov. De cualquier manera, los dos veteranos fueron atacados despiadadamente por los miembros de la generación más joven.

A pesar de haber conseguido este éxite, el holandés de 24 años terminó con un algo decepcionante 4 de 9. Un destino similar le esperaba al favorito por rating, el único jugador con más de 2700 en la nómina, el vietnamita Le Quang Liem, quien apenas pudo conseguir un +1 y terminó dejando escapar puntos de rating.
En cambio, se destacó el juego inspirado de los locales Ray Robson, Jeffery Xiong e Illya Nyzhnyk (soy consciente de que este último todavía representa a Ucrania, pero Illya vive en Estados Unidos hace unos años ya, desde que ingresó al equipo de la Universidad de Webster, así que lo cuento entre los nuestros).
Una batalla crítica se jugó en la segunda ronda.

Illya capturó la punta después de esta victoria, pero no pudo acrecentar su ventaja. Un triunfo en la sexta ronda sobre Eric Hansen (el popular GM canadiense, representante de los "ChessBrahs") incrementó la puntuación de Nyzhnyk a +2, pero finalmente no fue suficiente para ganar el torneo.

Varuzhan Akobian una vez más deleitó a sus seguidores con su juego valiente, pero al final sus permanentes problemas con el reloj lo dejaron en la mitad inferior de la tabla de posiciones.
En la misma penúltima ronda, quien se convertiría en el ganador estuvo cerca de sufrir una caída.

Jeffery apenas tiene 19 años y ya ha luchado en mil batallas. Se puede esperar que dé un salto cualitativo en 2019... ¿y qué mejor momento sino en el Campeonato de EE.UU. que se jugará este mes en San Luis? Pongamos nuestras esperanzas no sólo en Jeffery sino también en Ray y Varuzhan, además de Sam Sevian y Alex Lenderman, quienes están defendiendo los colores de Estados Unidos en el Mundial por Equipos de Astana, y Awonder Liang y Timur Gareyev, quienes están descansando en casa (o tal vez saltando de aviones). Habrá estrellas de sobra en el torneo. ¡Vayan por ellos, muchachos!

Bai domina la sección "B"
Para concluir mi reportaje, me gustaría decir unas cuantas palabras respecto al Torneo "B". No hubo mucho intriga en cuanto al ganador del evento. El chino Bai Jinshi, de 20 años, está acostumbrado a jugar en los Estados Unidos, y no tuvo problemas para navegar las dificultades del torneo, usando su amplio repertorio de aperturas, combinado con un competente juego posicional. Gran parte de sus victorias las consiguió en finales largos.
Me deleitó ver un nombre familiar en el torneo: el de mi viejo amigo y compañero de equipo Greg Kaidanov, quien pocas veces recibe invitaciones a torneos cerrados.
Como lo demuestra la siguiente partida, Greg se hizo respetar en San Luis.
