La sustancia fue detectada y el árbitro llamó a la policía. La colocación del veneno fue grabada en un vídeo de vigilancia, y la autora ha admitido el hecho. Dijo que había actuado para vengarse de la jugadora, a la que conoce desde la infancia, quien, según ella alega, la había "ofendido gravemente".

La Federación Rusa de Ajedrez (FCR) anunció que había suspendido temporalmente a la ajedrecista daguestaní Amina Abakarova de participar en todas las competiciones, según informan los medios, después de que derramara mercurio cerca del tablero de su oponente en un torneo en Majachkalá. El comunicado correspondiente apareció en el canal de Telegram de la federación en la tarde del 7 de agosto.

El primero en informar del incidente ocurrido en el Campeonato de Ajedrez de Daguestán el 2 de agosto fue el canal de Telegram de Baza (informe en ruso al final de la página). Según el vídeo de una cámara de vigilancia publicado por la publicación, Amina Abakarova, de 40 años, estudió la lista de participantes y luego vertió mercurio junto al tablero de ajedrez de uno de sus oponentes. En esa mesa debía sentarse otra participante, la campeona de Europa Umayganat Osmanova.
Vídeo de GMC en YouTube. Se grabó antes del comienzo de la ronda y mostraba a Abakarova estudiando la lista de participantes, dirigiéndose después a una mesa concreta y vertiendo algo junto al tablero. Después, esparció el líquido sobre la mesa con una pieza de ajedrez.
El mercurio se hizo notar casi de inmediato. Osmanova y otros ajedrecistas empezaron a correr y a gritar sobre la sustancia venenosa. El árbitro tomó el control de la situación: recogió el mercurio en una bolsa y llamó a la policía. Al mismo tiempo, los organizadores de la competición comprobaron las cámaras de vigilancia y vieron a Amina Abakarova vertiendo el mercurio. Abakarova contó a las demás jugadoras que había querido vengarse, ya que supuestamente Umayganat Osmanova la había ofendido gravemente de alguna manera.
A finales de julio, Abakarova y Osmanova se enfrentaron en la final del torneo de Makhachkalá. Ambas ajedrecistas sumaron el mismo número de puntos, pero la victoria se concedió a Osmanova, basándose en factores adicionales. Esta derrota fue probablemente una de las razones por las que Amina decidió envenenar a su oponente.
Según fuentes de Baza, Abakarova y Osmanova se conocen desde la infancia y siempre han sido competidoras a nivel regional. Los amigos de Amina estaban muy sorprendidos por sus acciones. La chica es descrita como una buena y amable entrenadora de niños.
Tras el envenenamiento, Osmanova siguió participando en el torneo y ganó un premio. Los familiares de la chica no tienen intención de perdonar a Abakarova y quieren que reciba la pena máxima.
