Campeonato del Mundo de Ajedrez Rápido y Relámpago
El Campeonato del Mundo de Ajedrez Rápido y Relámpago se disputa entre el 1 y el 11 de julio de 2012, en Astana (Kazajstán). Cabe destacar que se trata del primer campeonato del mundo de ajedrez rápido en la historia de la FIDE. Participarán los 10 mejores jugadores del escalafón actual de la FIDE. La bolsa de premios asciende a US $400,000.
El Campeonato del Mundo de Ajedrez Rápido se disputará durante tres días, en forma de torneo de liga con cinco rondas por día. El control de tiempo es de 15 minutos para todos los movimientos, más 10 segundos de incremento por jugada.
El campeonato de ajedrez relámpago es una competición también de liga, con 16 participantes y 15 rondas por jornada. El control de tiempo es de 3 minutos para toda la partida, más 2 segundos de incremento por movimiento.

De las 120 partidas jugadas durante los tres días del mundial de ajedrez rápido, 42 concluyeron en empate (=35%). Las blancas ganaron 47 partidas (=39.2%) y las negras 31 (=25.8%). La partida más breve fue una victoria en 20 movimientos y solamente dos partidas concluyeron en tablas en menos de 25 movimientos.
