El propio Karpov ha sido el mejor jugador de la fase previa de la "Copa Karpov" en Cap d'Agde

El XII campeón del mundo demostró que sigue siendo un excelente jugador de ajedrez, sobre todo en la modalidad de ajedrez rápido.

Tras las rondas regulares de la fase previa, por detrás de los dos líderes inequívocos Karpov y Bacrot, hubo tres jugadores empatados con 8 puntos, con lo cual hizo falta disputar unas partidas de desempate. De ese grupo también formaba parte una mujer, Mariya Muzychuk que solo en el segundo duelo de desempate, entonces a dos partidas, fue superada por Ivanchuk.
